Bringing together the most promising heads in Aquaculture!!!

The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) was constituted in 1972 under the Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India.  Amidst the abundance of the natural resources of India, MPEDA functions as a nodal agency for the regulation, development and promotion of marine product exports.

Right from techno-economic appraisal to technical support, from technology/upgradation to total quality management, from market intelligence to market penetration, from technology transfers to multimedia education programmes, the MPEDA plays a pivotal role in building up a sound infrastructure and in optimizing India’s seafood resourcefully.

India's growing environmental consciousness has led to an increased awareness in the practice of aquaculture. Diminishing dependence on antibiotics and stringent eco-friendly measures have been implemented by the Indian aquaculture industry.  This has had significant impact on the quality and value of the produced seafood. This has in turn generated a burgeoning demand for improved equipment and ancillary farming machinery, high quality feed and post larvae, essential to aqua farming.

Heralding a new era of opportunity and development, MPEDA organizes INDAQUA 2009, a mega exposition on aquaculture.  The time has come for aquaculture in India to consolidate its resources and technology and propel this sunrise sector into a new era of business and prosperity.

The MPEDA had organized three INDAQUA expositions in 1993, 1995 and 2007 at Chennai, which had a deep impact on coastal aquaculture in the country.   It is expected that INDAQUA-2009, the fourth in the series will give further impetus to the aquaculture sector enabling us to formulate strategies for optimizing the utilization of our aquaculture resources.  In aquaculture, India is the largest producer after China.  During the year 2006-07 the exports of marine products from the country stood at over 612,000 MT, with a value of US$ 1,853 million.  Shrimp continued to be the mainstay of seafood exports, contributing more than 54% in terms of value.  Increase production of brackish water species to at least one million MT by the year 2017.  MPEDA proposes to achieve implement mission mode programmes in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Orissa.  50,500 ha in Gujarat, 27,500 ha in Maharashtra and 20,350 ha in Orissa is being targeted.   This is expected to generate at least 5 million additional job opportunities in the country besides the increased export earnings, which are projected at US$6 billion (Current exports US$1.6 billion).
